Dunois L. and Mary D. Beman came to Castlewood from Cresco, Iowa in 1904. They lived with their daughter, Oma Watson, on the farm NE of Castlewood. In 1908 they moved to town and operated a grocery store. Dunois was a carpenter and helped build the Castlewood School in 1915. The family moved to Watertown in 1914. His death certificate from Codington Co. South Dakota, listed his death at 9:30 p.m. on 23 OCT 1955 at age 97 years due to coronary occlusion. He had lived in Watertown for 41 years. He was born 8 NOV 1857 at Brush Creek, Fayette County, Iowa. He was US citizen and was never in the armed forces. No social security number. Parents names were Henry Beman and Sarah Sedgwick. 1920 census:SD, Codington Co, Lake Twp (between Lake Kampeska and Hiway 212) lists Dunois L. (62-IA-NY-NY-farmer) and Mary D. (60-IA-PA-IL) Beaman with son Dick H. (27IA-IA-IA-laborer) and Leona M. (22-MO-MO-MO) with Mary L. (4 2/12) and DuNois (1 9/12). 1910 census (So. Dak., Hamlin Co. Town of Castlewood) lists Dunois L. (age 52) and Mary D. (age 50) Beeman with three of 6 living children (10 births) still at home - Dick (17), Alta (15) and Rachel (13). By 1910, Oma was married; Mina died in 1905 and Ora was in Michigan. Birth records of three of his children list Dunois' (spelled Norris, DuNoyes, and Dunois) age as 35 in 1888, 33 in 1892 and 36 in 1894. His nationality is listed as American and he was born in Brush Creek, IA. His occupation is listed as Laborer. Death records of Abbie (June 3, 1899) and twins, Charles L. (Aug. 18, 1901) and Albert E. (Sept. 8, 1901) indicate all are buried in New Orleans Twp. Cemetery 2 miles south of Cresco of Highway V-58. There are no tombstones for these graves (Mr. Conway of Cresco). Family history said one twin's name was Edwin; Howard County Birth Record Index lists Albert E. and Chas. L. as twins of DeNoyes L. and Mary D. Hunter Beman (Presume Albert was named after Dunois' brother Albert...) 1900 census (Vernon Springs Twp, Howard Co., Iowa - 22 JUNE) lists Dunois L. (born Nov. 1858) and Mary D. Beman, married for 18 years, with 6 children - Mina I., Ora E., Elsie B., Dick H., Alta M., and Rachel E. - all born in Iowa. Mary is listed as mother of 8 children with 7 living. (Oma was in Volga, Clayton Co, IA with Ella Beman Horton Bevins). Dunois was a Farm Laborer. Sherman and Louis Wentworth are living next door. 1880 Census for Iowa, Winneshiek Co., Orleans Township lists (on page 210) a male, Nois(?) Beman, age 21 as a 'servant' Farm Laborer living with the Henry Richards Family on June 7th. This Beman was born in Iowa and both his parents were born in New York. This same census lists (on page 213) the D.D. and Sarah Hunter family with seven daughters, ages 20 to 1, including Mary (age 20). The three older daughters were born in Iowa and the younger ones were listed in Missouri (ages 9 and 7), Kansas (age 5) and Arkansas (age 1). D.D. Hunter's occupation is Farmer. 1870 Census (Fayette Co., Fairfield Township, Iowa, 19 JULY 1870) lists Denice Beman (age 10) as son of Henry Beman. 1860 census(Fayette Co., Fairfield Township, Iowa, 19 JULY 1860) lists Dunois (age 8/12) as son of Henry and Sarah Beeman. Thus 1859 is year used for his birth date. Marriage record lists groom as age 24 and bride as age 23 on 1 MAY1882. They were married by S. S. Smith, J.P. and John M. McCoy was Witness. Louvina Hunter and Addison Platt were married DEC 20, 1891 at the house of D.L. Beman who also swore the affidavit for their marriage license. Sarah L. Hunter and Albert Albertson were married AUG 23, 1884 at the house of Dunois Beman by R. H. Gibson, J.P.
