Tombstone states Mina I. Beman; death certificate says Iona Mina
Beman. Death certificate from Hamlin Co., South Dakota, states cause of
death to be Pulmonary T.B., duration of illness 180 days, attend by Dr.
J.H. Crawford. Deceased was in state for 11 months.
Mina was in Michigan living with uncles prior to her coming to So.Dak.
Birthdate - about 4 AUGUST 1886 = calculation from date of death and
age on tombstone. Birthdate of SEPT 1885 taken from 1900 census
(Vernon Springs Township, Howard County, Iowa - 22 June, 1900).
Birthdate of 4 SEPT 1885 from obit. (clipping found in artifacts of Oma
Beman Watson).
Obituary (no date or newspaper indicated) reads:
Mina Iona Beman died at the home of her parents in Hamlin township,
Friday afternoon, with that dread disease, consumption.
Mina Iona beman was born in Decorah, Iowa, September 4, 1885, and lived
there and at Cresco, Iowa until the fall of 1903 when she went to Eaton
Rapids, Mich., to attend school. While she was there her parents moved
to this community and she joined them about a year ago, since which
time she has been confined to her home more or less with that dread
disease which finally called her to her last resting place.
She leaves a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. [wrong initials, vh]
Beman, and several borther and sisters to mourn her loss.
The people of this community will rejoice with her in her infinite gain,
while they extend sympathy to the loved ones who remain to mourn her.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday
afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.W. Christianson, and the remains were laid
at rest in the Castlewood cemetery.
