(74-NY-PA-PA) and Deborah (63-OH-VT-NY) Jeffers with sons, Charles

1860 census: IA, Howard Co, Albion Twp., PO=Granger, MN, 10 JULY
lists Christian (54-NY) and Deborah (43-OH) with Samuel 18, Martha 16,
Margaret 14, Henry 12, Chas 10, Daniel 8, Harriet 4, (all b. in IL) and
Matilda 4/12 born APR in Iowa.
Also in1860 Census: IL, Winnebago Co., Village of Roscoe is a Maryett
Jeffers (15-F-born in IL) living with Deliverance M. (33-farmer-born in
NY) and Celinda (33 born in NY) Hecose with Willard N. (4-IL) and Stuart
L. (2-IL) Hecose. [This may be daughter of James Jeffers, brother of
Christian.]
1855 IL census: IL, Winnebago Co, Roscoe twp. lists Christian Jeffers
with Males: 3 less than 10, one 10-20 and one 40-50; Females: 2 less
than 10, two 10-20 and one 30-40.
1850 Census: Winnebago Co, Illinois (Roscoe Township) lists Christian
Jeffers as a Farmer (value of real estate not listed). His wife, Deborah
(born in Ohio), and he (born in N.Y.) have 5 children ages 11 (Sarah) to 2
(Henry) all listed as born in Illinois.
1840 census: Illinois, Clark County, p. 87: lists Christopher Jeffries
with one male 30-40 and four females: >5, two 20-30 and 40-50. (Ages
fit for Christian, Deborah and Sarah - with two unidentified females,
ages 20-30 and 40-50, which could be his mother [wrong age listed] and
his sister Christina.
Land Grants - Clark Co., IL lists Christian Jeffers 9/31/1832, NE1/2,
SE1/4, sect 21, twp 9N, Range 11W, 40 acres and 2/2/1837, W1/2, L1,
sect 4, twp 10N, Range 12W, 40 acres. Thus, he was in Clark Co. at those
times. Henry Jeffers and James Jeffers are also listed in 1839, 1837
and 1834; these may be his brothers.
Tombstone Records of Winneshiek county, Iowa lists Christian
Jeffers, age 94 1801-1895 in Eddy Cemetery in Fremont Township.
Also Deborah, 74, 1817-1891, (his wife Deborah Johnson)
Visit to Eddy Cemetery noted that Buried adjacent to Christian and
Deborah are:
Daniel Jeffers, 1852-1882, and (presumed to be his child Daniel) and
Mary Jeffers, 80 years, Died Nov,1857 (Presumed to be his mother, living
with Christina and Joshua Johnson in 1850).
Between Daniel and Mary is a big stone stating Mother, Hattie L. Clark,
1855-1941 (this is his daughter).
I.G.I. lists the marriage date of Christian and Deborah in Clark County,
Illinois, as 24 Feb. 1838 and the birth of Hattie Jeffers (their daughter)
as 25 or 29 August 1855 in Roscoe, Winnebago Co., Illinois.
Obituary gives place and date of birth and death. He died at home of
his son, Charles. He moved with his parents to Clark Co., IL where he
married 27 FEB 1838 Deborah Johnson and moved to Winnebago Co. IL in
MAR 1847 and in NOV of 1855 moved to Howard Co, IA. 5 of 10 children
were still living.
1883 History of Crawford & Clark Co., IL, ed. by Wm. Henry Perrin
makes three references to Christian Jeffers in Clark Co.
p. 263 - Christian was 1 of 4 corporals in Spy Battalion, 2nd Brigade,
Illinois Militia Mounted Volunters, commanded by Capt. John F.
Richardson, called into service June 19, 1832 (organized June 5, 1832,
marched to Ft. Wilbourn, Lower Rapid, Ill. River. Mustered out at Dixon's
Ferry, Rock River, IL, Aug. 15, 1832.
p. 337 - John F. Richardson's company (including Pvt. Christian) used to
defend York villiage from Kickapoo Indians in 1832 - saw no fighting.
p. 426 - Isaac C. Miller and Christian settled on Section 4 in Marshall,
Anderson Twp. in 1836. Many entries were made by residents of older
community for speculation.
Son - Samuel:
Bessie Minaker: Samuel died in Union army in the battle of Shiloh
Enlisted from Howard Co. Iowa.
Adrian Jeffers: Military record notes Samuel died 2 AUG 1863 of wounds
from charge on Rebel works at Jackson, MS, 12 JULY ,1863. Record notes
Samuel was born in Clark Co, age 19 years, 5 ft 10 inches tall, light
complexion, gray eyes, dark hair and a farmer joined at Decorah, IA and
mustered in at Keokuk on the 8th June, 1861, from Twin Springs (i.e.
Kendalville). Burial site unknown.
