Cremation in East Lawn Nitch C Tier 2 followed services at 10 o'clock last Saturday mornin
g from the James R. Garlick funeral home for Walter, a former Galt resident, who passed awa
y Thusrday in the Knights of Pythias rest home in Santa Rosa. Walter was born June 20, 186
5 at Macomb, Illinois. During his residence in Galt he was active in lodge work, being a mem
ber and officer of the local Knights of Pyhtias lodge. He was an employee for several year
s of the Sego Milk company here, and had a large number of warm friends in the community. Wa
yne remembers that Walter left Illinois after his father remarried, and he never looked back
. The McDonough County 1880 Census shows Walter still living with father and step-mother al
ong with 2 siblings. At that time he was 14 years of age. Records show that Walter was bee
n employed on the Montana Dir. in 1888-89 a a yard switchman. He left that position on Sept
. 16, 1989. He left of his own accord and with a good record. After that he was employed b
y Northern Pacific Railroad Co. from Oct. 4, 1889 until Novermber 3, 1890 as a brakeman. H
e was in Livingston, Montana. His supervisor wrote, " I do not hesitate to recommend Mr. Pat
terson as a man of good charactor. I believe he would give any Company satisfaction." His n
ext job was with Southern Pacific Railroad Co. in Oakland as a yardman. His employment was f
rom December 5, 1890 until October 1, 1891. On Oct. 1st he was discharged, not black liste
d for leaving a main line switch open.
