Miss Colborne Passes at Seattle
Elizabeth Colborne, Bellingham artist and illustrator whose work was acclaimed by art critic
s throughout the country, died Saturday at her home in Seattle, where she had lived for the p
ast ten years.
Born in Beloit, Wisconsin, Miss Colborne came to Bellingham, then Whatcom, as a young girl an
d made her home here with her aunt, the late Mrs. T. R. Kershaw. After attending grade schoo
l and high school, she studied art in the East, and later taught art classes at the Bellingha
m Normal School. A resident of New York for many years, she maintained a studio there, exhib
iting her paintings in New York and other art centers. In commercial work her forte was illu
strating childrenÙus books and Christmas cards. In 1939 she sponsored an art exhibit in the A
rgent galleries.
Characteristic of Miss ColborneÙus work was a quality distinctly Northwestern in feeling, an
d this found a passion in typical Pacific Northwest scenes, many of them Bellingham inspired
. Art critics agreed that it was in intimate studies of wood-cut scenes that Miss ColborneÙu
s originality and interpretation were most evident. One of her best known works was ÙSOld Lo
g Deep in Ferns and Moss.ÙT
TAUGHT ART HERE
After returning to Bellingham from New York, Miss Colborne taught art classes for young peopl
e at her home near Whatcom Falls and later at her home near the foot of Schome hill. In 193
9 Western Washington college staged an exhibit of her water colors and block prints featurin
g such titles as ÙSFishermenÙus Boats at Squalicum Fill,ÙT ÙSLarson Mill BurnerÙT and ÙSLumber Mill
s, Bellingham Bay.ÙT
When World War II broke out Miss Colborne joined the staff of Boeing Airplane Company in Seat
tle, and was employed there for six years, or until the time of her death.

n possession of Martin-Zambito Art Studio in Seattle, received at Simi Valley, California Jan
uary 20, 2004.
ÙSBorn in Chamberlain, South Dakota, Elizabeth Colborne came to Bellingham at the age of twelv
e and finished her education in the Bellingham public schools.
After completing a three year art course at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, she had special land
scape training with Rockwell Kent at Monhegan Island, Maine, and studied blockprinting unde
r Allen Lewis and etching under C. W. Mielatz at the Art StudentsÙu League in New York City.
At the time of the war, Miss Colborne gave up her work if illustrating childrenÙus books an
d joined a detatchment of the Land Army on Long Island, where she had many interesting experi
ences.
Miss Colborne finds that people in the east are very much interested in her northwest fores
t scenes. Now, after five years of work in Bellingham, she is taking a group of her characte
ristic water colors and block prints to New York City for exhibit.ÙT

ELIZABETH ALINE COLBORNE
Elizabeth Aline Colborne was born in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and there at the age of fiv
e began her art studies. Her father, a civil engineer who made fine mechanical drawings, wis
hed his daughter to be an artist and started her training early.
On the death of her parents she went to live with her aunt, Mrs. T. R. Kershaw in Bellingham
. After finishing high school there in 1903 she went to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., w
here she studied art for three years.
After graduating she obtained a position with the Decorative Designers of New York City, doi
ng cover designs, end papers, and decorative pages for books.
Later after teaching art in Bellingham for a few years she returned to New York and establis
hed her own studio, working for various publications. Eventually most of her work was for Pl
att & Monk, publishers of childrenÙus books. She illustrated and also invented the ÙSDo Someth
ing BooksÙT for children.
She worked continuously and studied evenings, taking etching lessons from Mr. Meyeowitz at t
he National Academy. Thru her reading and study in the Art Reference Room of the New York Pu
blic Library she discovered the method of sun-etchings which she used so successfully in maki
ng Christmas cards that were sold for many years at the Arts and Crafts in Boston, and Geor
g Jensens on Fifth Ave. in New York.
It is quite an exacting process and is probably a lost art again.
(I should like to say here that IÙRÙR..the remainder of this page runs off the copy I received.
