Mrs. Mary E. Bell, wife of Dr. Samuel Bell, passed away yesterday afternoon at 1:30 oŁuclock a
fter a lingering illness of heart trouble of long duration. Mrs. Bell has been confined to h
er room since February and for several weeks past she has been very low.
Mary E. Bowen was born at Akron, Ohio, April 18, 1841. She was the daughter of Hon. Hiram B
owen, a newspaper man. When she was 8 years of age she moved to Janesville with her parent
s and grew to womanhood in that city. During her residence in Janesville she was confirmed a
nd became a member of the Christ Episcopal Church.
In 1864 she married Dr. Bell and ten years later came to Beloit where she has since made he
r home. After her removal to this city Mrs. Bell united with the St. PaulŁus Episcopal Churc
h and was ever one of its loyal members. Although she was a woman who found her greatest ple
asure in her own home, she made many friends and her death will be mourned throughout the cit
y.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her husband and two daughters, the Misses Nettie Evalyn (Bell) an
d Martha Wheeler (Bell). She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. T. R. Kershaw of Bellingha
m, Wash., and two brothers, Marvin K. Bowen and Wheeler S. Bowen, a newspaper man of Huron, S
outh Dakota. The funeral services will be held at the house at the corner of Public and Colle
ge avenues, Wednesday morning at 10 oŁuclock. Interment will be in the city cemetery.
