DR. SAMUEL BELL was born in Saratoga county, New York, May 31, 1841, the son of Adam and Ja
ne (YATES) BELL. Baptized by Domine VAN DUSEN, of the Dutch Reform Church. In June, 1849, th
e family came west by the way of the Erie canal, around the Great Lakes and by teams, locati
ng in Rock county, Wisconsin. When the subject of our sketch grew to manhood, receiving suc
h education as he could secure in the public schools of New York and Wisconsin, in September
, 1860, he entered the office of Dr. Corydon FARR, of Shopiere, Rock county, with whom and un
der whose direction he remained in close touch for most of the time of four years. Attendin
g regular nine month courses of lectures at the medical department of the University of Michi
gan, and spending his vacations as contract surgeon in Carver Hospital,
Camp Convalescent, Arlington Heights and the Old Red Tavern Hospital, at Alexandria, Va., an
d Nashville, Tenn., where he was placed in charge of "ward I," hospital No. 1, a gangrene war
d, with 131 beds of hospital gangrene. After receiving a commission from Governor LEWIS as f
irst assistant surgeon of the Fifteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry he joined that regimen
t on their march to Atlanta and remained until the regiment was mustered out in 1865. After t
he last battle at Nashville Dr. BELL was detailed to take charge of the giving of anesthetic
s in the field operating hospital, and gave and superintended the giving for three days conti
nuously. He was then appointed surgeon of the Fifty-fourth Wisconsin Volunteers, a regiment t
hat his colonel, O. C. JOHNSON, had reorganized; but the regiment was not called into service
. On leaving the army the doctor engaged in professional work at Prairie du Sac, Sauk county
, Wis., remaining until January, 1868, when he located at Shopiere, where he soon built up a
n extensive practice, and during which time he was appointed postmaster, which office he hel
d during his stay there. In 1874 he moved his family to Beloit, still holding much of the pra
ctice about the country and in Clinton, that he had acquired from his former location, whic
h practice he was soon obliged to relinquish because of the demand upon his time in the city
. The doctor served as health officer for six years and resigned the office because of the de
mands along professional lines. His interest in educational affairs is shown by eight years o
f efficient work as a member of the school board and treasurer of district No. 1. Professiona
lly he is a member of the State Medical Society, the Central Wisconsin Medical Society, and i
s present president of the Rock County Medical Society, a member of the American Medical Asso
ciation, International Association of Railway Surgeons and the Milwaukee and St. Paul Associa
tion of Railway Surgeons. At his class reunion at Ann Arbor in 1904 the doctor was made pres
ident of his class association, which aim to meet every five years during commencement wee
k at Ann Arbor. April 25, 1890, the doctor was appointed an examining surgeon on the pensio
n board at Janesville, which appointment he resigned eight years after, because of professio
nal demands on his time. When in 1897 the laws of the state required the appointment of stat
e medical examining board, Dr. BELL was honored by Gov. Edward SCOFIELD with an appointment
, and was made the first president of the board. The appointment was removed for four years i
n 1899, which was the limit of the law in time of service. Dr. BELL has been a surgeon for t
he Chicago & North-Western railroad continuously since 1868, and for the Chicago, Milwauke
e & St. Paul railroad since 1874, and president of Strong Emergency Hospital staff, which hos
pital he organized and opened in 1899. He has always been actively abreast of the times in ev
erything new in his profession, and a close student and observer of the best operators in th
e land. For years he has been spending all his vacations in hospital work. Socially he i
s a member of Beloit Commandery, Knights Templar, a companion of the Military Order of the L
oyal Legion of the United States, a Comrade of L. H. D. CRANE Post, G.A.R., which order at it
s forty-first encampment, held at Oshkosh, June 3-6, 1907, unanimously elected him departmen
t medical director of the state of Wisconsin. August 29, 1864, Dr. BELL was married to Mar
y Evelyn BOWEN, of Janesville, Wis., daughter of the late Hon. Hiram BOWEN, many years a lea
ding citizen of Wisconsin and editor of the "Janesville Gazette" and "Milwaukee Sentinel." Tw
o daughters, Nettie Evelyn and Martha Wheeler, comprise their family. In June, 1908, Dr. Sam
uel BELL was elected department surgeon of the G.A.R. for the depart- ment of Wisconsin.

The Way It Was
Nov. 20, 1896
(Friday) Justice has prevailed for Dr. Samuel Bell, a Beloit surgeon who answered the call t
o help wounded soldiers near Atlanta during the Civil War, and while there ``appropriated'
' a small tent for use as a hospital had the $12.82 cost of the tent deducted from his pay; a
fter proclaiming this an ``outrage'' and protesting to the War Department some 30 years ago
, Dr. Bell now has in hand an $11.08 check from the War Department, to compensate him.

Roster of Field Officers and Staff 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry The Scandinavian Regimen

Below is a roster of the field officers and staff of the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Re
giment, which served with distinction in the Federal Army during the American Civil War (1861
-1865).
The field officers and staff were the soldiers who actually ran the regiment. There were othe
r officers in the 15th, but they were responsible for running the regiment's 10 individual co
mpanies.
The 15th was known as the "Scandinavian Regiment" because its officers and enlisted men wer
e almost all immigrants from Scandinavia, predominately from Norway, but also from Denmark an
d Sweden. While men from these countries served in many different Civil War units, Federal an
d Confederate, the 15th was the only 'all Scandinavian' regiment on either side.
Here are some things you should know before you use this roster.
It is based on the official roster published by the State of Wisconsin in 1886. It include
s a list of all the officers and enlisted men officially assigned to this company of the 15t
h Wisconsin at one time or another during its 3 year existence. The 1886 roster was issued, i
n part, for use in securing military service pensions. It is considered to be the most accura
te roster available of Wisconsin's Civil War soldiers and sailors.
Beware of factual and spelling errors in this roster. Some have been identified; others hav
e not. Some errors result from mistakes made when the official roster was transcribed to thi
s page; when identified these errors are corrected by this site's webmaster. Other errors ar
e present in the original official roster published by the State of Wisconsin; none of thes
e errors have been corrected on this page. When an error in the official roster has been iden
tified and documented, this site's webmaster will add the correct information [within bracket
s] where the error appears on this page. If you suspect or are aware of an error on this page
, please contact the webmaster. Thank you.
Beware of variations in soldiers' names. While some of the 15th's soldiers used their birth n
ames when they enlisted, many dropped their farm name and others enlisted using 'Americanized
' first names. Some enlisted under different names at the urging of Army officials, who sugge
sted this as a way to eliminate duplicate names.
The left column lists the military ranks and the names of the men who held them in this compa
ny. Like the official roster, the roster on this page is arranged by military rank, from high
est to lowest. Officers are listed in the order they held a specific rank; enlisted men are a
rranged alphabetically by last name. Note: names that appear in the color blue and are underl
ined are links that can be clicked on to open a separate page containing a detailed profile o
f that soldier.
The Residence column lists the town or city where the soldier was living when he joined the 1
5th. All are located in the State of Wisconsin, unless otherwise noted.
The Rank From/Enlisted column lists the date each officer first officially held the rank show
n (rank from) and the date each enlisted man enlisted in the 15th.
The Remarks column includes official notations on the soldiers' military service in this comp
any. Remarks listed in the color red indicate that the soldier died or was killed while servi
ng in the 15th Wisconsin.
