Obituary:
Antoinette Hand Hatch
Died 28 Jan 1882
Obit from: Portage, Columbia County, Wisconsin Newspaper Obit Index.
Printed in paper: 4 February 1882
It is but a few months since the Hon. Jesse F. Hand and his wife, old and respected resi
dents of Lowville, in this County, came down from their present residence at Phillips, Wis.
, to bury their son in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Their daughter, Mrs. Antoinette Hatch, aged 36 years and 7 months, died at their home in Phil
lips, on the 28th ult., and her remains were brought to Portage by them, on Tuesday last, an
d by the relatives and friends, after service in St. JohnÙus Church, on Wednesday, were laid b
eside those of her deceased brother.
The deceased was born in Akron, Ohio, and at the age of three months was brought by the
m to Walworth Co., Wis., where they resided four years and then came to their farm in Lowvill
e, where she grew to womanhood. She was an uncommonly bright girl and a very superior schola
r. She ripened into a most successful teacher, which occupation she pursued till her marriag
e with Dr. T. L. Hatch, Jan 1, 1872, teaching in Lowville and Fall River in this county, als
o in Neillsville and West Salem, Wis., and in Helena, Arkansas, as also in Indiana and Minnes
ota. After her marriage, she went to reside in Blooming Prairie, Minn., where in the June fo
llowing, she was stricken down with spinal meningitis, from which she never recovered, but su
ffered untold agony to the day of her death. About eight years since, she was brought to th
e paternal roof, and remained with her parents until she was relieved by death.
The care of her by her parents and friends, which was necessarily constant, has been truly ex
hausting to them, but rendered cheerfully and with full, sympathizing hearts. She has bee
n a worthy member of the Episcopal-church, since 1861. The many friends of the deceased an
d her family, mourn with them, but rejoice also at her relief from the most intense suffering
.
