Also left behind is a pi cture of Abraham Lincoln. In 1915, Olive, his widow, wrote the Department of Interior to cla im his war pension. They rejected her claim on the grounds that the soldier's death in 187 8 of suicide is not accepted as in any manner due to his service in the United States army . There is no record in the War Department and no other evidence of origin in the service o f the soldier's alleged insanity. From researcher Marcia Green: Civil docket index film (974,910) shows Hiram being sent to a n asylum in 1872. He hired a lawyer and was declared sane in 1875. Film 974,895, in serie s of final records of probate show that his wife was the adminsitrator, with Jonathan Owen an d ZP Bennett as sureties In 1875, petition made by Daniel Williams and Susan Owen of Colon, St. Joseph County, Michiga n. (Justus W. Simons and Anna Simons listed as interested parties.) Hiram had seen a docto r in Colon, Michigan. From researcher Anne Colucci: Hiram was age 40 when he joined the 171st at Sandusky, Oh on M ay 2, 1864. The 171st was a "100 day" enlistment unit and so he served from May 7, 1864 unt il Agu. 20, 1864. He was a Corporal upon enlistment. The 171st was made up of several Ohi o National Guard Units: The 51st Batt. ONG from Trumbull County, the 14th ONG from Protage C ounty, the 85th ONG form Lake County and th 86th ONG form Geauga County. These units were ac tivated and sent to Sandusky; where they were mustered in to Federal service. There fist ass ignment was guard duty at Johnson's Island Prison; but on June 9th, they were sent to Covingt on, Ky and placed on rail cars and sent to Cynthiana to join Keller's Brigade. Upon arrival , the 171st was attacked by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's Cavalry. 13 men were kill ed and 54 wounded. After the fight, the 171st was sent back to Johnson's Island until Augus t 20, when it's enlistment expired.
