E-MAIL FROM DAN RUSSELL RE: John Henry's Diary 1879-1880
VickiThis diary really is quite exciting, even though ggrandpa was a
man of few words ( or frugal with his use of paper). He mentions
going places with Candace and also talks about uncle Smith and
Candace. He mentions Pa a lot and Anna, of course. On June 8, 1880,
he says "did not work today anna was confined today gave Birth to a
fine girl." He goes to Methodist church meetings and subscribes to
the New York News. His writing is very good and seems quite educated
with over all very good spelling and penmanship. He was an extremely
hard working man and was constantly building houses, fences, farm
buildings, plowing, sowing and doing hauling with his team for
others. He had a good sized farm with crops in the field, as well as
pigs, horses, cows, chickens. As I get time I will search the 1880
census for info on the other people he mentions. We are so lucky
this diary is 1879/1880, so that names can easily be searched.Love
ya VickiDan
