Fleming HARPER / Mary EDMONDSON
_MDCL wounded in civil war
Alexander D. Harper now lives at 411 Rankin Street, Indianapolis.
In 1864 he lived with his father in Clark County, Indiana. He was then sixteen years ol
d, and ran away from home and enlisted in the 12th Tennessee Cavalry, Co. "I".
He was wounded near Pulaski, Tenn. and was taken to a negro hut. He from there comm
unicated with an old German lady in Clark Co., IN., who told his father where he was. H
is father went to Tenn. and brought him home, where he kept him without reporting him t
o the army or allowing him to return after he was restored to health.
He then ran away from home again and came to Indianapolis. He told the story to Jose
ph L. Fisher, who advised him to enlist, if he desired to return to the war, under an assum
ed name and to disregard the fact that he had been taken away from his Tennessee regiment
. He accepted this advice and enlisted in the 66th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers Infantr
y, and served until the 25th day of September,1865, when he was honorably discharged a
t the headquarters District of Raleigh, North Carolina.
On the 26th day of July 27, 1890, his certificate being numbered, 859,038. He wa
s dropped from the pension rolls about the month of April, 1896, the cause assigned bein
g that he was a deserter from the 12th Tennessee Cavalry.
Mr. Harper wants this record expunged by a special act of Congress, and to be restor
ed to the pension rolls. Mr. Harper drew his pension between the years 1893 and 1896 fo
r wounds received during his last service in the 66th IN. Inf. Vol.,his name assumed i
n joining.
