Letter to son James F. Montgomery:
Hurricane , Putnam Co.WV Oct 16,1873
Dear son yours of 15th July before me. We are in usual health but that is nothing to brag o
f for scarsely any of the time that I am free from pain my claim for additional pension has b
een rejected on examming surgeons evidence. I have been to some expense in trying for, whic
h shortens my purse that much. They have been trying to cut me down on that I have been drawi
ng but I think in the long run I will get an increase on Hernia at least as there is more all
owed for that disability than there was over 2 years ago. You wanted to know what kind of cou
ntry we live in. It is both hilly and mountainous with some nice land in the valleys. I liv
e near TEAYS valley but the most of it is thin land. Our hills beats it - for grain 2 or 3 ti
mes over. We have hard climbing to get over it- but by doing our part by the land we can mana
ge to do very well for this reason in particular. It is very healthy here. We have a hard tim
e grubbing the land- it being the hardest part of the clearing as I think. But we can plow u
p close to the stumps (a thing you cannot do there). We have some very cold weather at times
, the weather being more changeable than with yours but our winters are shorter than with you
rs. Our lands are best calculated for grazing, but most people keep their lands under the plo
w. The most of the time until they are wore and then it wears them out in return to get a liv
ing off of them. If I could like I could once I could make a good living here as it is at thi
s time I am not earning much. The fact of the business people do not work as they used to u
p there & then this year we have got-HELL in our place in the shape ofKING ALCOHOL which wi
ll ruin any place ( I hope you don't tamper with it). I will have to shorten sail as space i
s limited. Meda is working from home & Milo just started to school. I would like to see Frank
lins wife and children. If you see them again tell them to write to me. Enclosed find ring yo
u can polish it up on leather of deer skin or soft wood. I hope it will fit. Keep it to remem
ber me by if you should never see me again ( which may not be unless you come here). Ed hasn'
t wrote that letter yet. Tell me did Rebecca ever get over her insanity & does Ed live wher
e he did in time of the war & does the old folks live with him. My love to you and respects t
o your mother and all inquiring friends. Hoping this will find you all well and that you wil
l write soon & come to see me. I remain your affectionate parent- Orrin Montgomery P.S. yo
u say your weigh 140. I am fleshy & weigh about 195 & as uselys(?) as I am fleshy only to kee
p bread from molding. We have had as nice weather this fall as I ever saw & now recollect I s
hall be looking for a picture of yours in your next letter, Good bye.------------------------
