INDEX

Notes

James boated provisions from Buffalo to Conneaut and as far west as Toledo. He was near enough to the scene of Perry's victory on Lake Erie in 1812 to hear the firing of the guns. James and Mary Baldwin, his wife were pioneers of Conneaut, having moved there three years after the first settlement of Harpersfield. The trip was made in open boats from Buffalo to Conneaut. The parents and their four children disembarked at night, sleeping on the beach beneath their sheltering boats. Arriving at Conneaut, they hastily constructed a dwelling from the barks of trees, until a more substandial one of logs could be made.
