Notes

Line in Record @I0030@ (RIN 30) from GEDCOM file not recognized: _FA2 Frank Truman Hendry Frank Truman Hendry was born in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio the third child and second son of Alonzo Hendry and Jane Ann Penfield. He was born November 24, 1854. His older brother, Alonzo, died in infancy. His middle name, Truman was in honor of his maternal grandfather Truman Penfield of Penfield, Lorain County, Ohio. Very little is known about Frank Truman's early childhood although it is probable he was raised and schooled in Sandusky. In 1871 when he was 17, he was enrolled in the "Prep" program at Oberlin College, Oberlin, Lorain County Ohio where several of his aunts and cousins had been educated. He attended Oberlin College until sometime in 1873. Oberlin College records show that he went to work for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad at that time, a career that was to last 55 consecutive years. His postings with the railroad include Hannibal, Missouri (1874-1878), Topeka, Kansas (1878-1881), Indianapolis, Indiana (1881-1890), Cleveland, Ohio (1890-1895), and Detroit, Michigan (1895-1932). His position in 1929 was General Agent, Detroit. Among his effects was a "gold pass" to the Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Frank Truman married Fairy Estelle Whiting February 23, 1882 in Topeka, Kansas. Undoubtedly he met her while stationed there. (See Estelle Whiting Hendry biographical sletch.) Estelle Whiting Hendry as she preferred to be called, was of German origin, the daughter of Melvin Lent and Hulda Sparr. She was orphaned and adopted by George B. Whiting November 21, 1872 at the age of ten. Frank Truman Hendry and Estelle Whiting Hendry had two sons, James Rowley Hendry born December 22, 1883 and George Whiting Hendry born January 22, 1885. Both sons were born in Indianapolis, Indiana. The ultimate home address was 151 Griswold Street, Detroit, Michigan. What follows is speculation from anecdotal memories of James Abbot Hendry and Thomas Penfield Hendry, the sons of James Rowley Hendry. Estelle Whiting Hendry was apparently a very strong personality. It seems she had very strong views about morality. The living of her views on morality suggest things were very difficult at times for Frank Truman but there is general agreement that he was not absolutely faithful. Estelle, on the other hand, was very much involved in the raising of her children even to the point of relocating her residence to Ann Arbour where her sons attended Michigan Agricultural College, later Michigan State University. Estelle, not surprisingly, traveled extensively by railroad and pictures of her trips to the Grand Canyon and Los Angeles with her two sons survive. These are dated as early as 1895. Considerable time, vacations, summers and holidays were spent at a "cottage" on Lake Wawasee, Indiana which Estelle had from her adoptive father, a property known as "Seven Oaks". Several pictures survive. Frank Truman Hendry died December 20, 1932 aged 78 years and one month. His death benefit from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad was $3,000 payable to his wife, Estelle Whiting Hendry. In a letter dated May 30, 1925 to Frank Hendry from Helen Starr of South Pasadena, Ca., there is reference to a Penfield geneology being compiled by a Miss Pompilly. In it there is data that the Hendrys are direct descendents of John Howland who came over on the Mayflower. Documentation of this claim has been sought. Andrew M. Hendry (1997)
