Notes

living in Delhi, New York Following from Rick Harper: Source: History of Delaware County, New York. Here is a biography of Sarah's son James E. Harper. It also mentions that his mother was Sara h McEckron. That was probably a phonetic spelling of McEchron. All too common. It says that s he was a native of Washington County, New York and one of six children of Alexander McEckron. I've posted the full biography below from the Biographical Review The Leading Citizens of De laware County, New York published in Boston in 1895. The reference is in Section 3. JAMES E. HARPER, a dealer in watches, diamonds, jewelry, and silverware, whose attractive sto re is located on Main Street, Delhi, well represents the mercantile interests of this village , and is classed among its most substantial business men. He is here carrying on a brisk an d thriving trade, and, although young in years, has already fully established himself in th e confidence of his fellow-townsmen. Mr. Harper is a native of Delaware County, having been b orn February 1, 1867, in the town of Kortright. His immediate ancestors were also of this cou nty, his grandfather, Henry Harper, having been a life-long resident of the town of Harpersfi eld, which was likewise the birthplace of his father, William H. Harper. James E. Harper spent his boyhood and youth on the parental homestead in the place of his nat ivity, pursuing his studies in the public schools until seventeen years old, when he came t o Delhi to learn the jewelry trade, serving his time with J. S. Page, the leading jeweler o f the village. Four years later Mr. Harper bought out the jewelry business of O. C. Mann, o f this place, and, after carrying it on in his own name for three years and six months, large ly increased his trade by purchasing the long-established business of his former employer, Mr . Page. This large store, ninety feet long, he has completely restocked with choice goods fro m the best manufacturers in his various lines, having to-day not only the most extensive, bu t the best-equipped establishment of its kind in Delaware County. His honest and square deali ng in all business transactions has won for him the respect of all who know him, and enable d him to secure an extensive patronage among the good people of this vicinity. On February 20, 1890, Maggie S. Monteith, a native of Martin, Mich., became the wife of Mr. H arper; and into their family circle two bright and active children have been born - Pauline a nd Harold Glen Harper. The parents of Mrs. Harper, Thomas and Margaret (Campbell) Monteith, w ere pioneer citizens of Martin, Mich., where Mr. Monteith cleared off a large tract of heavil y timbered land, and improved a good homestead, on which he and his wife spent their declinin g years. He lived until seventy-five years old. Mrs. Monteith, who survived the death of he r beloved husband but fifteen weeks, died at the age of seventy years. Both were devoted memb ers of the United Presbyterian church. Mr. Harper has a pleasant home in a very desirable location on Main Street. In politics Mr. H arper is a firm adherent of the Republican party, ever sustaining its principles by voice an d vote. Socially, he is a prominent member of the Sons of Temperance of Delhi, and is Corresp onding Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association, and is President of the County Chr istian Endeavor Union. Both he and his estimable wife are valued members of the Second Presby terian Church, of which he is Trustee, and in whose Sunday-school he has been a faithful teac her for the past six years. He may be counted as always ready to lend a helping hand to the n eedy, and to push forward any good substantial enterprise that will benefit his neighbor or i mprove the town.
