F. H. Kearney.
Owner of F. H. Kearney Co., business, President of Merchants & Miners National Bank.
In two small frame buildings that represented an investment of a little more than $1,000 he g
ot his early schooling. He was born in Fall River, Columbia County, Wis., Dec. 27, 1853. H
e worked in a general store from 1870 to 1876 when he went to Ishpeming, staying there two mo
nths and rounding out two years at Champion. In 1878 he started a general merchandising busi
ness at Republic, remaining there until 1895. From 1892 to 1894 he was manager of a large co
-operative store at Champion.
Although he came to Ironwood in 1895, he maintained his business at Republic for three years
. He was in charge of his brother's furniture business in the old Kearney block here where t
he O'Donnell Seamans building now is located. He was manager of the Ironwood Store Co. stor
e until 1898 and on Dec. 1, of that year started the wholesale grain and feed business that h
e now conducts.
Mr. Kearney was elected president of the Merchants & miners bank in 1913, but it was n
ot until May 1914 that the bank actually did business. He has served continuously as preside
nt of the bank since that time. Mr. Kearney has been president of the Carnegie library boar
d for more than 20 years and president of the board of trustees of the Presbyterian church fo
r a like period. He was president of the water commission here at one time and headed the ch
arter revision commission many years ago. During the war he was treasurer of the Gogebic Cou
nty chapter of Red Cross and treasurer of the War Relief association. He became a member o
f the Blue Lodge 45 years ago at Ishpeming and belongs to various Masonic organizations. H
e is an Elk and a Rotarian.
On June 19, 1883, he was married to Miss Rose Labold of Detroit, the culmination of a romanc
e which began when Miss Labold visited a sister in Republic. The only child in the family i
s Everett, who is in business with his father.
His hobby? Yes, he has one. His hobby is to play golf with Belmont Waples.
