Born 1847 in Dayton Township, 4.5 miles north of Ottawa, IL.
His Mother passed away in 1851 and his Father remarried in the year 1852 Amanda Harriet (Spri
ngstead) Strider, and so, a step-mother for James Ivor and brother William Harper. (Amanda h
ad had a child (Mary) with her first husband, John Strider, who had died in about 1848-49. T
he Federal Census of 1850 shows Amanda living with her parents with a 2 year old daughter, Ma
ry.)
At the age of 5, James Ivor had a brother and step-sister to grow up with, followed by anothe
r 4 step-sisters and 1 step-brother. James Ivor had more "step-siblings" as company betwee
n the years 1850 and 1867, the year his father and stepmother moved to Iowa. Some of those c
hildren are recorded to have been born to John N. and Amanda, first in Illinois and then in I
owa.
Witnessed the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, with his father, John Nelson Montgomery, on the shoulde
rs of his Grandfather, John Harper Montgomery, at Ottawa, IL, at age 11, August 21, 1858.
Lived at home until 16 years old (1863), at which time he became a school teacher, teaching f
or about 9 years.
During the 1869-1870 school year he taught at South-Somonauk School, Somonauk, IL.
He taught school until 25 years old (1872).
During that time he filled the position of Deputy Superintendent of Schools of LaSalle Count
y for 4 years, while also reading Law.
His law tutoring was done by E. S. Abbott, Attorney, of Leland, IL.
Admitted to the Bar, on examination, in Ottawa, IL, in October, 1869.
Married Mary A. Lett, 21 May 1871.
Practiced Law at Leland, IL, LaSalle County, until 1875. His Law Office was in the basemen
t of the Somonauk Hotel, then owned and operated by Mr. John M. Goodell.
At one time he owned 33.22 acres of land on the SE corner of Leland, as shown on a Plat of Le
land.
Moved his Law Practice to Sandwich, IL, in 1875.
Officiated as City Attorney of Sandwich, IL and four years as a Justice of the Peace.
Surveyor of lands in the upper LaSalle and lower DeKalb County, IL, areas, ca. 1883.
Later practiced Law for many years in Aurora and Chicago, IL. Practiced Law in State and Fed
eral Courts.
1885 - Belonged to the Masonic Fraternity and the Order of Odd Fellows.
1888 -1889 - Surveyor for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in the Territory of Dakota, p
rior to the Dakota Statehoods.
1897 - Had Law Offices in Aurora at: - - - - -.
1897 - Had Law offices in Chicago at: 704 Atwood Building, Corner Clark & Madison Streets.
1897, Private Journal - 12 June: "Returning from business trip to Philadelphia and New York
, visited relatives in Penn Line, PA, about 15 miles from Andover, OH. "Saw Maria, Eli, Bert
, and Ivor Platt, siblings of his Grandmother Malinda Platt Montgomery."
1897, Private Journal - June 14 to June 23: While on the trip he was sick with lung conjesti
on and lung disease. While on the trip he was taking deposits for stock in some entity or pr
oposition.
Remained a Lawyer until his death.
Moved from the farm into Aurora approximately 1895, as the Warranty Deed of that date, fo
r a house at 319 North View Street (pre-1929 address; 115 North View Street) , lists the gran
tor as Mary A. Montgomery et al, and as noted in the 1913 journal written by May Belle Montgo
mery. May and Ward were farming the Lett farm at that time (1913) with two children and on
e on the way.
