John enlisted from Jefferson County, New York, May 7, 1861 to serve two years
or sooner discharged. On June 3, 1861 he was mustered into United States
service at New York City as a private of Co. E 38th Regt. New York Volunteer
Infantry under Capt. O. A. Tilden and Col. J. H. H. Ward. The Regiment took
part in the following battles: 2nd Bull Run, VA 30 August 1862: Antietam, MD
17 September 1862; Fredericksburg, VA 13 December 1862; Chancellorsville, VA
1-4 May 1863; and Gettysburg, PA 1-3 July 1863. He was discharged in May 1863
at New York City because his term of service had expired.
He returned home to Jefferson, NY and on 30 August 1863 married Cornelia C.
Wood of North Blenheim, NY. They were married by Noble Lovett, Minister of the
Gospel, in the presence of Charles H. Lovett and Marion Lovett.
He re-enlisted in September 1863 as a private of Co. B 91st N.Y. Infantry under
Capt. Stackhouse and Col. Van Zant. He participated in the following battles
and ceremonies: Wilderness, VA May 1864; Petersburg, VA 15-30 June 1864;
Appomattox, VA; Lee's surrender 9 April 1865 and Grand Review Washington, D.C.
23 May 1865. He was honorably discharged in July 1865. He had been wounded in
the face and also had a saber scar on his back.
He moved with his wife and son George to a farm near Utica, MN where John and
Edward were born. In i874, the family moved to a farm in Hartland Township,
Pierce County about 5 miles from Maiden Rock, WI. In 1884, he and his sons,
John and Edward, built a log cabin and homesteaded 160 acres on the southeast
quarter of section 28 in Township 38 Burnett County, Wisconsin. Title was
recorded 12 February 1894. This was poor land, much of it low and swampy, but
the family managed a livelihood by Christian faith, frugality and hard work.
All information compiled by John W. Hendry, great grandson of John Hendry, from
documents, notes, and remembered stories. For example, the saber scar story
was related by John W., son of John Hendry. His father had removed his shirt
while working in the fields exposing a large scar on his back. He explained
he had been slashed during a cavalry attack. Under persistent questioning, he
reluctantly admitted he had killed his attacker with his bayonet. This was the
only man he ever talked about killing.
