INDEX
Notes
Samuel was the oldest surviving child of David Hendry and Selina Hotchkiss.
Four children were born before Samuel but all died young. Four were born
after Samuel.
Samuel Hendry, the oldest of the family of David and Selina Hendry, embarked
in mercantile pursuits, built mills of Grand River, was a man of business, but
owing to the stress of the times at the close of the War of 1812-14, he failed
and a few years thereafter was elected Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of
Ashtabula County which office he held for 15 years; was also clerk of the
Supreme Court 21 years. He edited the Ashtabula Sentinel, a leading Whig paper in the county
. He afterwards purchased land in Michigan at Brest, which purchase proved disastrous. He s
old and moved to Oberlin, Ohio, to educate his children. He was one of the Trustees of the C
ollege and Mayor of the town where he died and was burried.
