"The funeral of Dr. Harold E. Grupe, 56, periodontist of Portland, Ore., formerly of Paris, w
ho died in a fishing boat accident off the coast of Alaska, 8 Mar, will be held here Wednesda
y at 10 a.m. in Fry and Gibbs chapel, the body arriving in Paris late Sunday. The Rev. Clayt
on G. Forthman of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment to be made in Evergree
n Cemetery. Dr. Grupe, son of Mrs. O.H. Grupe and the late Mr. Grupe here, was born in Siloa
m Springs, Ark., 29 Jun 1910, the family moving to Paris when he was seven years old. Gradua
ting from Paris High School in 1926, he took pre-dental work at Paris Junior College, graduat
ing from Baylor University Dental College in 1931. He was a member there of Delta Sigma Delt
a Fraternity and belonged to various dental societies, being a diplomat of the American Boar
d of Periodontology and fellow of the American College of Dentistry. He gave scientific pres
entations at dental congresses in Rome, Paris, France ans Spaind, also the Armed Forces Denta
l Conference, and another in Los Angleles, between 1956 and 1967. He practiced in Sudan an
d Amarillo (TX) before entering the armed forces in 1952 as a Lieutenant Colonel, serving a
s Periodontologist at Camp Chaffee, Ark., Kaiserslauten, Germany, and Ft. Dix, NJ. He joine
d the faculty of the University of Oregon Dental School in 1959, and became the Head of the D
epartment of Periodontology the following year. His death occurred while on a fishing trip d
uring a dental convention he was attending in Junneau, Alaska. Besides his mother, Dr. Grup
e leaves his wife, the former Lois Williams of Dalhart; two children: Dr. Harold E. Grupe, J
r., Rochester, NY, and Mrs Bernhard Steber, Aachan, Germany; six grandchildren, and a sister
, Mrs. John B. McCormick, Prairie Village, KS."

In the 1927 annual / yearbook of Paris High School, Harold is listed as being in the Pep Club
, Orchestra, Spanish Club (vice-president), Latin Club, Curtain Club, and he was Assistant Ed
itor of Hi-Hoots. He seemed to be an active student.
