Robert M. Yerkes was born on May 26, 1876 . Joining with John D. Dodson , Yerkes developed th
e Yerkes-Dodson law relating motivation to performance. Mainly a comparative psychologist, Ye
rkes studied chimpanzee behavior. As APA president in 1917, Yerkes was instrumental in shapin
g the response of psychologists to the demands of World War I , the first large-scale progra
m of applied psychology.

bert M. Yerkes, wife of the late professor of psychobiology of Yale University, and a forme
r Clevelander, died yesterday at her home in New Haven, Conn. She was 89. Mrs. Yerkes, thefo
rmer Ada Watterson, was married to Prof. Yerkes in 1905. Her husband was a specialist in th
e study of primates, monkeys and apes, and had founded the Yale Laboratory of primate biolo
gy at Orange Park, Fla. He died in 1956. Mrs. Yerkes was graduated from Barnard College. Sh
e taught botany there prior to her marriage. Survivors include a daughter, a son and one gr
andchild. Services will be tomorrow in Yale University's Dwight Chapel.
