I have in my possession a copy of a letter written by Jennet (Janet) Hendry to
her brother David Hendry on December 2, 1819. I believe the original is in the
William Hendry papers held by the Western Reserve Historical Society in
Cleveland.
Jennet was writing from her home in Halifax MA although she dates the letter
Bridgewater, MA. At that time, David was living in Harpersfield, Ashtabula
County Ohio.
The letter gives some detail of Jennet and her family. There is some
indication the letter was answered by Samuel Hendry, son of David Hendry but
not until 1827, approximately three months after David died. Thus Jennet was
the last surviving member of the family of Thomas Hendry and Ann Miller.
Jennet in writing states she has not heard
from David, or the rest of the family in 30 years. By this date, three of her
Hendry brothers had been killed in the Revolution (1780) and a fourth, William,
had died in Harpersfield N. Y. in 1801.
The letter is one of the marvelous historical documents that occasionally comes
to light.
